Farm Bill Updates

ADA staff attended the Senate Agriculture Committee Farm Bill hearing "Food for Thought: The Role, Risks and Challenges for American Agriculture and the Next Farm Bill in Meeting the Demands of a Growing World" on Thursday May 26.

Secretary Vilsack focused his opening statements around how American agriculture can help "grow" the U.S. out of the current deficit. Themes of his testimony included continuing investments in agriculture research and sharing advances in technology with the world, continuing conservation practices and techniques, and helping other countries to embrace new technologies that will increase the world's food production. Issues surrounding crop insurance, supporting rural Americans and biofuels were discussed by the committee members. The first field hearing was held on May 31 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.
