Howard University Honors ADA

ADA representatives met recently with officials at Howard University to discuss the discontinuance of the university's Coordinated Program in Dietetics. Following the meeting, Howard University President Sidney A. Ribeau, PhD, recommended to the university's board of trustees that it merge the departments of nutritional sciences and health, human performance and leisure studies and continue the program.

Howard University's program is the only combined undergraduate nutrition program at a historically black college or university. "ADA went beyond and over the call of duty to save the nutrition program at Howard," said Allan A. Johnson, PhD, MNS, associate dean of the division of allied health sciences.

ADA representatives at the meeting included President Judith C. Rodriguez, PhD, RD, FADA, LDN; Evelyn F. Crayton, EdD, RD, LD, member of the ADA Board of Directors; Jeanne Blankenship, MS, RD, vice president for policy initiatives and advocacy; and Ulric Chung, PhD, senior director of the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. Also participating was Caleb Gilchrist, a staff member in the office of U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis' (D.-Ill.).

Howard University's School of Allied Health Sciences honored ADA at a luncheon April 29 for fighting to save the university's nutritional sciences program. Quoting Ralph Ellison that "Education is all a matter of building bridges," Dr. Crayton said: "ADA looks forward to building bridges with Howard now and for years to come."

Photos of the event honoring ADA have been posted to ADA's Facebook page.
