Congress Passes 2011 Budget Bill

Congress voted last week to keep the government going through the end of September, making cuts to programs which include WIC, agriculture and nutrition research. ADA supports the fact that reductions must be made for the overall health of the economy, but maintains that cuts must be made fairly.

ADA is working with key members of Congress from both parties to increase awareness of the effectiveness of nutrition services and interventions. For example, the Prevention and Public Health Fund – which includes the funding of nutrition interventions and for which ADA has been advocating – will remain intact. President Obama has said he would veto efforts to defund this program.

The discussions on the budget and federal spending are expected to continue for the next two years. It is very important that all ADA members share with their Public Policy Panel leaders their successes and outcomes. This information will be helpful in providing documentation needed to prove the value of ADA members' services.
