Part 2: Making Diabetes a Priority on Capitol Hill

The Diabetes Advocacy Alliance, of which ADA is a member, hosted a well-attended Congressional reception designed to heighten awareness among lawmakers of the need for continued funding of services for those with diabetes.

More than 100 people attended the Capitol Hill reception. U.S. Rep. Diane DeGette (D.-Colo.) chair of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, explained the need for support in Congress to her colleagues and other distinguished guests, including former Senator and diabetes services advocate Tom Daschle.

In addition, ADA staff members brainstormed with Hall of Fame basketball player Dominique Wilkins on ways to get high-risk people screened for diabetes while including the importance of nutrition counseling and MNT in this screening message. Wilkins, a type 1 diabetic, shared that, in his outreach efforts, he finds fear of injections is one of the major barriers to early screening. ADA has strategy meetings planned this week to help maintain Congressional diabetes funding.
