ADA's Food Desert Congressional Briefing Draws Big Crowd

As National Nutrition Month® came to a close, ADA collaborated with four members of Congress to host a well-attended Capitol Hill briefing March 31 that brought the issue of food deserts to the forefront. More than 70 people, including Congressional staff members, representatives of community organizations, ADA members and others attended the event that was designed to begin a dialogue on food deserts in anticipation of work on the Farm Bill.

U.S. Reps. Danny K. Davis (D.-Ill.), Sheila Jackson Lee (D.-Texas), John Shimkus (R.-Ill.) and Marcia Fudge (D.-Ohio) worked with ADA to organize the briefing. Reps. Davis and Lee spoke at the briefing as well.

Additional speakers included Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center; Kelly D. Johnston, vice president for government affairs at the Campbell Soup Company; Richard A. Weinzierl, professor and extension entomologist at the University of Illinois; Mari Gallagher, principal of Mari Gallagher Research and Consulting Group; and Joseph Roudez III, village trustee of University Park, Ill.

Photos of the event are available on ADA's Facebook page.

ADA's position paper Food Insecurity in the United States and the practice paper Addressing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities were shared with attendees.
