Antibiotic Resistance and Residue Work Group Members Named

ADA's Legislative and Public Policy Committee was asked by the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition DPG to consider supporting the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, or PAMTA in the last Congress. The legislation was aimed at addressing the growing problem of antibiotic resistance due to overuse in both human medicine and animal agriculture and is expected to be reintroduced in the current Congress. LPPC determined that additional information and scientific review were needed since ADA does not have a policy or position statement on antibiotic resistance or residues.

LPPC recently established a workgroup to further address the issue, chaired by LPPC vice-chair Mildred Cody, PhD, RD. Several DPGs were invited to nominate members to participate in the workgroup. They include Stacia Clinton, RD, LDN, Hunger and Environmental Nutrition; Stephanie Heim, MPH, RD, Public Health and Community Nutrition; Lynn Larsen, RD, LDN, Clinical Nutrition Management; Hilary Thesmar, PhD, RD, Industry; and Suzy Weems, PhD, RD, LD, Food Systems and Agriculture.

The purpose of workgroup is to review published research and expert opinions regarding the risk of antibiotic resistance, both demonstrated and theoretical, in humans related to the use of prophylactic and therapeutic antibiotic use in animals and subsequently to develop a white paper for use by the association in policy development. Several local and national health organizations have voiced their support for the legislation.
