Governors Express Concerns about Affordable Care Act

Twenty-one governors sent a letter last week to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, asking her to make "critical adjustments to the rules concerning state-run health-care exchanges or risk having the federal government assume full responsibility." A Florida court has ruled the health reform bill's individual mandate that people purchase health insurance is unconstitutional.

The Florida ruling is supported by 26 states and the case is expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court. "In addition to its constitutional infringements, we believe the system proposed by the [Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act] is seriously flawed, favors dependency over personal responsibility and will ultimately destroy the private insurance market," according to the governors' letter to Secretary Sebelius.

The governors' letter suggested six "improvements" to the PPCA. "In its current form, the law will force our health care system down a path sure to lead to higher costs and the disruption or discontinuation of millions of Americans' insurance plans," the letter says.

The governors followed this message with a letter to President Obama asking him to direct the Department of Justice "to support an expedited appellate process for the pending health-care lawsuits to reach the United States Supreme Court as soon as possible."
