Significant Cuts Proposed for Food and Nutrition Programs

Last week, the House Appropriations Committee released a continuing resolution funding the government after March 4. The proposed resolution cuts into all areas of Fiscal Year 2011 domestic spending, with many programs identified for elimination. This bill will affect programs in which ADA members work, as well as their clients.

Debate on the resolution starts this week. It includes a 22 percent cut in current agriculture spending and nearly 11 percent from the departments of Labor and Health and Human Services.

ADA staff is working several fronts on the proposed budget cuts that would affect members and the health of Americans. These efforts include working collaboratively with other key partners including those working in aging, prevention, child nutrition, public health, food safety, hunger and other groups. In addition, ADA staff will be meeting with key members of the White House and USDA on these cuts.

ADA has mobilized it grassroots efforts by sending out an action alert to all members to contact their Representative to express their opinion.
