House Agriculture Committee Names Members, Begins Work

Having named its members for the 112th Congress, the House Agriculture Committee is now at work on reauthorization of the Farm Bill, a major piece of food and nutrition legislation that is up for renewal in 2012.

The committee's new chairman, Frank Lucas, is the first Representative from Oklahoma to head the Agriculture Committee. The Subcommittee on Nutrition and Horticulture, to be chaired by Jean Schmidt (R.-Ohio), has jurisdiction over the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other food assistance programs. Collin Peterson (D.-Minn.) will be the ranking Democrat on the committee.

Members of the Senate Agriculture Committee have yet to be finalized.
