States Move Ahead with Insurance Exchanges

As part of the Affordable Care Act, states are tasked with setting up insurance exchanges and must meet a short deadline. These exchanges have implications for ADA members.

The goals of the exchanges are to offer options to both individuals and small businesses to shop for comparable coverage; to offer an easier application process for low-income people applying for Medicaid; and to help business owners and moderate-income individuals apply for federal tax credits.

Exchanges are expected to include simplified insurance offerings, standardized applications and consumer friendly on-line presentations. The deadline for states to have the exchanges in place is December 31, 2012. The program has been met with bipartisan support from Democratic and Republican state governors. Even those governors who support repeal of the federal health law are nevertheless organizing state insurance exchanges.

How does this affect ADA members? If RDs and DTRs are not involved with the development of state insurance exchange plans, they likely will not be included in the services covered by payers. Members are encouraged to contact their State Regulatory Specialist for help with their affiliate's efforts.
