Minnesota Members "Dish Up" Help to Public

ADA members work to optimize the health of the nation in myriad ways. When it comes to community outreach, Jackie Bouche, MS, RD, LD, CDE, vice president for education at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, envisioned a novel approach for the residents of New Ulm, Minn.

The rate of obesity and overweight in New Ulm is 73 percent. To address the problem, with the help of a federal grant, the Heart Institute Foundation partnered with Allina Hospitals and Clinics, New Ulm Medical Center and the community of New Ulm to create the Hearts Beat Back: Heart of New Ulm Project.

The project aims to help residents improve their health risks and to reduce the number of heart attacks that occur in the New Ulm area over the next 10 years.

As part of the campaign, each of the 7,000 households in New Ulm will receive a mailing containing tools including ADA's Dish Up a Healthy Meal place mat.

For members who would like to help their communities develop outreach projects, ADA offers discounts on bulk orders of Dish Up a Healthy Meal, as well as many other consumer publications. To learn more, call Diana Faulhaber at 800/877-1600, ext. 4830.
