Agriculture's Role in Improving Health and Wellness

The Academy was a founding sponsor of an April 7 half-day summit held at the U.S. Capitol, "Cultivating a Healthy Future: Agriculture's Role in Improving Health and Wellness," that offered an innovative look at the impact of U.S. food systems on human health. Speakers highlighted links between agriculture and human health and how agriculture research programs can support healthy outcomes in people, plants and animals.

School Food Modernization Act Introduced in Senate

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) have introduced the School Food Modernization Act (S. 2210). This bipartisan legislation would establish loan and grant assistance programs within the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help schools upgrade their kitchens and dining areas and acquire new equipment. The bill also authorizes funding to train and provide technical assistance to school nutrition service personnel across the country.

Animal Pharmaceutical Industry Agrees to Comply with Voluntary FDA Guidance

Twenty-five of the 26 pharmaceutical companies that sell medically important antimicrobials for food-producing animals have voluntarily agreed to comply with Food and Drug Administration guidance to phase out the use of these pharmaceuticals for production purposes.

Deadlines for AMIA 10x10 Course: April 18 Grant Applications, May 7 Registration

Apply for Foundation grants to participate in the fifth offering of the popular Academy/AMIA 10x10 Informatics Education Program, which begins May 7. The online course will culminate at a face-to-face, full-day program at the 2014 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo. The deadline to apply for a limited number of Foundation grants is April 18 and the course registration deadline is May 7.

April 22 Webinar: 'Addressing Patient Malnutrition to Improve Outcomes and Reduce Hospital Costs'

Malnutrition is common in the hospital setting and can adversely affect clinical outcomes and costs, but it is often overlooked. An April 22 webinar will feature a steering committee member of the Alliance to Advance Patient Nutrition, a partnership of three leading health care organizations including the Academy. April 30 Deadline: Take CDR's National Validation Survey, Qualify for $500 Apple Gift Card

Make your voice heard in defining the dietetics profession's practice competencies. Registered dietitian nutritionists and dietetic technicians, registered are invited to take part in a national survey by the Commission on Dietetic Registration to help ensure competencies accurately describe the knowledge, skill and judgment of practicing RDNs and DTRs.
