House Passes Bill to Keep Intravenous Drugs Safe

Last week, the House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Drug Quality and Security Act, which will give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration more authority to regulate companies that compound sterile drugs, including intravenous nutrient solutions, and ship them across state lines. Many Academy members treat patients in clinical settings with intravenous nutrient solutions, and this bill is a significant achievement in ensuring that these solutions are safe.

Funding Doubled for the Champions for Healthy Kids Grant Program

For the past 11 years, the Academy Foundation has partnered with the General Mills Foundation to provide $500,000 in annual grants for innovative nutrition and physical activity programs being implemented by 501(c)3 charities that enlist the expertise of registered dietitian nutritionists. For 2014, the General Mills Foundation will double the amount it donates to the Foundation to $1 million.

The deadline is November 1 to apply for the Commission on Dietetic Registration's Leadership Grant Award, which provides financial support to registered dietitian nutritionists and dietetic technicians, registered to obtain leadership training.

To support the use of the recently enhanced "Hunger in Our Community. What We Can Do." toolkit, 25 grants of $200 grants are available. Recipients of the mini-grants agree to give two presentations between October 28 and December 27, utilizing the presentations for adults or teens from the "Hunger in Our Community" toolkit.
