Implementation of School Meal Standards

The Pew Charitable Trust asked more than 3,000 school food authorities how implementation of new school meals is going. Results indicate that, by the end of the school year, 94 percent are expected to meet the new standards.

Academy Awaiting CMS Final Rule on RDN Ordering of Therapeutic Diets

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has yet to finalize its proposed rule from February that would allow registered dietitian nutritionists in hospitals to order therapeutic diets. The Academy anticipates a final rule will be issued later this year, and will continue to keep members apprised of developments. In April, the Academy supported this rule and urged CMS to create strong, clear definitions that ensure patient safety and quality care when ordering therapeutic diets.

New Entry-level Registration Examination Administrator

The Commission on Dietetic Registration has selected Pearson VUE of Bloomington, Minn., as its new testing agency for entry-level registration examinations for dietitians and dietetic technicians beginning January 1, 2014. CDR's goal is to provide a seamless transition for its examinees and to continue to provide the current, high-quality computer-based examinations. ACT Inc., CDR's current testing agency, informed CDR earlier this year that it will no longer be administering professional credentialing examination programs.

To support the use of the recently enhanced "Hunger in Our Community. What We Can Do." toolkit, 25 grants of $200 grants are available. Recipients of the mini-grants agree to give two presentations between October 28 and December 27, utilizing the presentations for adults or teens from the "Hunger in Our Community" toolkit.

Hunger Webinars Archived for Viewing

Kids Eat Right recently hosted a series of six hunger webinars as part of the Future of Food project. In collaboration with Feeding America through an educational grant from the National Dairy Council, the purpose of the webinars was to help increase awareness about hunger as a public health issue as well as help equip Academy members with the knowledge and skills needed to provide effective nutrition education to food insecure audiences. The archived webinars are available for viewing.
