Federal nutrition programs, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, National School Lunch and Breakfast Program and the Special Supplemental Women Infants and Children Program, have provided a bridge for citizens during this time of economic downturn. Nevertheless, the percentage of those that are food insecure still remains high.

Issue of Hunger Highlighted During September

According to a new report from USDA, one in six Americans (or 48.9 million) lived in households that struggled against hunger in 2012. The Academy has submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regarding the proposed rule "Payment Policies Under the Physician Fee Schedule and Other Revisions to Part B for CY2014." The Academy's comments support the role of registered dietitian nutritionists beyond the MNT benefit in improving clinical outcomes and saving dollars for the Medicare program and the patients it serves.
