Medicare Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity Benefit

During the June 4 CMS Physicians, Nurses & Allied Health Professionals Open Door Forum, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced the Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity benefit currently cannot be provided in a group setting. The billing code established for the benefit (G0447) was valued as an individual service, so its use is limited to individual counseling sessions. CMS has received feedback from the provider community expressing concerns about this policy and is actively considering an option for group settings.

Hospital Farm Awarded for Innovative Approach to Nutrition Care

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, in Ann Arbor, Mich., recently received the Catholic Health Association's 2013 Achievement Citation for "innovative, synergistic approach to healing and wellness" - a 20-acre farm on the hospital's grounds that "uses organic methods, provides patients, volunteers and visitors an experiential way to understand the link between fresh air, exercise, fresh food, good nutrition and good health." The hospital's director of clinical nutrition is Academy member Lisa McDowell, MS, RD, CSSD, CNSD.
