Academy Member Speaks at Capitol Hill Obesity Briefing

Academy member Margaret Furtado, MS, RD, LDN, a member of the Weight Management dietetic practice group, recently spoke on Capitol Hill at a Campaign to End Obesity briefing. With more than 30 congressional staffers in attendance, the Academy educated decision makers about the role of the registered dietitian in fighting obesity and the value of medical nutrition therapy.

Urge Academy Champions in Congress - Take Prevention Fund Off Cutting Board

Discussions of sequestration (also known as the "Fiscal Cliff") threaten to cut the Prevention and Public Health Fund, a resource to prevent chronic disease by investing in community-based initiatives focused on proper nutrition, physical fitness and tobacco cessation. Academy members are urged to support our congressional champions who are fighting to protect the fund, which prevents disease and improves the health of Americans.

President-Elect Visits White House

Following a visit to the White House by Academy President Ethan A. Bergman, PhD, RD, CD, FADA, President-elect Glenna McCollum, MDOL, MPH, RD, met last week with staff from the White House Office of Public Engagement during a briefing about plans for President Obama's second term. She later attended a holiday reception at the White House hosted by the president and First Lady. Bergman, McCollum and Academy staff members met with representatives from the White House's Let's Move! Program to identify opportunities to partner in the future.
