The DC Metropolitan Area Dietetic Association participated in Food Day on October 24 and featured a public policy focus targeting food security and wellness. Academy President Ethan Bergman, PhD, RD, CD, FADA, participated in the event along with Washington, D.C., city council members. Food Day is a nationwide movement focused on improving our nation's food policies toward more healthy, affordable and sustainable food. More than 3,000 Food Day 2012 events occurred across the country.

October 24 was Food Day, a day to bring together Americans from all walks of life - parents, teachers, students, registered dietitians, health professionals, community organizers, local officials, chefs, school lunch providers and eaters of all kinds - to strive for healthy and affordable food produced in a sustainable, healthy way. If you participated in Food Day and would like your event to be featured in Academy social media communications, please submit photos and descriptions of your event and activities by November 7 to media@eatright.org.

Member Takes Special Position in Malawi

Academy member Stacia Nordin, RD, has been named nutrition officer (food security and policy) for the Malawi office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, promoting food diversity, food sovereignty and environmental health.

Kids Eat Right Helps Stella the Whale

Children across Florida are taking part in a unique exercise in goal setting to help Stella, a near life-size painting of a baby right whale, to "migrate" 700 miles from one end of the state to the other. While learning about what Stella eats to be healthy, students will also learn about the importance for themselves of eating breakfast, using the Kids Eat Right Healthy Breakfast toolkit.

The Academy Foundation offers awards to Academy members and dietetics students in recognition of their professional accomplishments and enables registered dietitians to enhance their education and skills. The deadline is February 1, 2013, to apply for many of the Foundation's continuing education, international and program development awards.
