Report Finds Sequester of Medicare Spending Could Lead to More Lost Jobs

A new report has found up to 766,000 health care and related jobs could be lost by 2021 as a result of a 2 percent sequester of Medicare spending mandated by the Budget Control Act of 2011. One study by the American Hospital Association reported that about 300,000 health-care jobs could be lost in 2013, affecting thousands of Academy members' jobs. Unless Congress takes action, there will be cuts to hospitals, public health research, long-term care communities, schools and reimbursement rates for private practitioners. Be prepared to voice your concerns about sequestration when Congress returns following the November elections. The Academy is working diligently on this issue - be on the lookout for more information in the near future.
