2012 Drought Continues to Cause Havoc on Food System ... Farm Bill Passage Is Needed

Triple-digit temperatures and little rain this summer are responsible for one of the most severe and widespread U.S. droughts in a half-century. As a result, the impact will hit grocery shelves and the global food market. Tougher Penalties for SNAP Fraud

The United States Department of Agriculture has announced tougher penalties to help crack down on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program fraud. These new steps includes tougher financial sanctions on retailers aiming to defraud SNAP as well as more effective tools for states to guarantee that benefits go exclusively to eligible Americans.

White House Hosts First 'Kids State Dinner'

Sponsored by the First Lady's Let's Move! campaign, the White House recently hosted the first "Kids State Dinner." The special guests were 54 children, ages 8 to 12, who won the Healthy Lunchtime Recipe Contest. Each child got a hug from Michelle Obama and a handshake from President Obama. Health Care Reform Forum: Next Steps for Insurance Exchanges and Medicaid

Last week's Public Policy Panel Forum addressed essential health benefits packages and Medicaid expansion as part of health care reform. Discussion centered on an overview of the options available to all states following the Supreme Court ruling upholding the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Speakers included Academy staff members Marsha Schofield, MS, RD, director of nutrition services coverage; and Pepin Tuma, JD, director of regulatory affairs.

Hawaii Joins 46 States with Dietetics Licensure

In 2000, the Hawaii dietetics licensure statute was passed and rules were signed by the governor in 2008. Since that time the Hawaii Dietetic Association has been working with key state agency leaders to finalize implementation. On August 16, the Hawaii State Department of Health's Office of Health Care Assurance announced final implementation.

Tennessee Healthy Weight Colloquium

Registration is open for the University of Tennessee's biannual Promoting Healthy Weight Colloquium, "Building a Foundation during the Developmental Stages of Adolescence and Pregnancy for a Healthy Life Course Trajectory - Nutrition, Physical Activity and Parenting." The conference will be held September 28 at the university's Knoxville campus, and can be viewed online as well.

Academy Offices Closed for Labor Day

The Academy's Chicago Headquarters and Washington, D.C., offices will be closed on Monday, September 3, for the Labor Day holiday.
