Monday, August 6, was the start of the official in-district summer work period for Congress until they return to Washington, D.C., September 6. This is a great opportunity for registered dietitians to meet with their members of Congress to talk about legislative issues and show elected officials the value RDs provide to the health-care system.

CDC Releases Obesity Map

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its new Obesity Map. CDC's new data support what registered dietitians already work to prevent: the legitimate health consequences of rising obesity rates in America. Unfortunately, according to the new data, no state had obesity rates lower than 20 percent and 12 states were above 30 percent.

Saying Good-Bye to Community Food Security Coalition - with Appreciation

After 16 years of work in the food justice movement, the Community Food Security Coalition is ceasing operations. The Academy has valued working with the coalition over the years to help pass and execute important legislation that improves access to healthy safe food. Many Academy members have made tremendous contributions working for and with this organization.

Iowa Food Safety Forum 2012 Features Rep. Tom Latham and Academy Leader

U.S. Rep. Tom Latham (Iowa) served as moderator for a recent food safety forum that included Teresa A. Nece, MS, RD, LD, vice chair of the Academy's Political Action Committee, who represented the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The forum focused on the importance of improved food safety to Iowa and the nation's health and economy.

Academy Meets with Congressional Leaders in Chicago

The Academy hosted a luncheon last week at the Headquarters office in Chicago, highlighting the role of nutrition in treating and preventing chronic disease and the need for a diversified workforce. The event, organized by the Academy's Political Action Committee, supported Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.) and included Rep. Danny Davis (Ill.) as a guest. The congressmen met with Academy leaders and voiced support for legislative and regulatory language that includes nutrition counseling and the registered dietitian.

Energy Balance 4 Kids with Play Enters Year 2 in California

RD Coaches in the Energy Balance 4 Kids with Play program soon will be working with 4th-, 5th- and 6th-grade students in the Oakland, Calif., area, through hands-on tasting activities, nutrition presentations, nutrition and physical activity challenges, RD coaching, nutrition-themed active games and cafeteria promotions.

Mini-Grant Applications Due Friday

Applications for Kids Eat Right RD mini-grants are due August 24. Twenty-five $200 grants are available to Campaign Members to give two presentations from any of the Kids Eat Right toolkits between September 10 and November 16.
