Academy Submits Comments on National School Lunch Program Certification Interim Rule

The Academy submitted comments to the Food and Nutrition Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture on an interim rule implementing a six-cent, performance-based reimbursement provision. The Academy expressed its support for the rule and the likelihood that it will incentivize school food authorities to comply with heightened nutrition standards as intended by the Healthy Hungry-Free Kids Act of 2010 and offered recommendations for improving the compliance certification process.

Senator Releases Report on State by State Impact on Sequestration Cuts to Health Programs

Sequestration is a process that was created by Congress under a law passed last summer known as the Budget Control Act. This process will cut $1.2 trillion over 10 years from the federal budget. Senator Tom Harkin (Iowa), chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, has released the first report of its kind to properly identify the impact sequestration will have on various health, education and labor programs.

USDA Beats Deadline for First Lady's Healthier School Challenge

As of the last week in July there are 3,717 schools that are certified in the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC). The challenge, which was incorporated by the First Lady's Lets Move! campaign in 2010, aims to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that increase nutrition and physical activity awareness in their school.

Academy Position Paper: Food and Nutrition for Older Adults

Nutrition is one of the major determinants of optimal aging and it is never too late to adopt healthy eating practices. Food is not only critical to physiological well-being but also contributes to social, cultural, and psychological quality of life.
