Academy Submits Comments to CMS on Malnutrition Codes, Essential Health Benefits

The Academy submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on two proposed regulations: 1) "Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment Systems for Acute Care Hospitals and the Long-Term Care Hospital Prospective Payment System and Fiscal Year 2013 Rates" regarding its proposed coding for malnutrition; and 2) "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act; Data Collection to Support Standards Related to Essential Health Benefits; Recognition of Entities for the Accreditation of Qualified Health Plans" supporting the initiative to have certain insurance issuers provide information sufficient to identify benefits of likely state benchmark plans. New NIH Study Finds Healthier Foods to be More Expensive

A new National Institutes of Health study that compared dietary intake data from over 2,000 adults to local grocery retail prices found that higher food costs were directly linked to nutrients that are commonly associated with lower risk of chronic disease. The study, entitled "Nutrient Intakes Linked to Better Health Outcomes Are Associated with Higher Diet Costs in the US" can be viewed online.

USPSTF Recommends Counseling for Obese Adults

The U.S. Preventative Service Task Force has recommended primary care providers screen patients for obesity and provide dietary counseling. Although the USPSTF does not consider reimbursement for providing a service in this assessment, they do take into account evidence, benefits and harms of the service. Prevention and Public Health Fund Grant Announcements Continue

The latest announcement of available funding offered through the Prevention and Public Health Fund includes a grant entitled: Strengthen and Improve the Nation's Public Health Capacity through National, Non-Profit, Professional Public Health Organization to Increase Health Protection and Health Equity. This supplemental grant will provide "state, tribal, local and territorial health department's available capacity building assistance that will improve public health infrastructure investment planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of evidence based practices." Watch for new announcements.

Include names, credentials, city, state, job titles and employer for everyone in the photo.

Member Named Outstanding Diabetes Educator

Academy member Robin B. Nwankwo, MPH, RD, CDE, of Ann Arbor, Mich., was recognized by the American Diabetes Association as the organization's 2012 Outstanding Diabetes Educator. She was honored as "a key contributor in the development and implementation of empowerment-based educational research studies among urban African Americans."

Member Presented Special Recognition Award by AAPI

Academy member Rita Batheja, MS, RD, CDN, of Balwin Harbor, NY, was presented the President's Special Recognition Award by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin at its national convention in Long Beach, Calif.
