Farm Bill Passes in Senate

The 2012 Farm Bill took a step forward last week toward becoming law when it was passed by the Senate with bipartisan support.

Prevention Fund Remains Intact

The Senate passed its spending bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services and Education. During the debate several amendments were offered that would have either severely cut the Prevention Fund or eliminated it entirely. Both amendments were defeated and the bill allocates $1 billion to the Fund, including $280 million for Community Transformation Grants, a $54 million increase from last year.

National Plan on Prevention

The U.S. Surgeon General has released the National Prevention Council Action, outlining more than 200 prevention and wellness actions led by various federal agencies and departments.

Hawaii Licensure Law to Be Implemented after Fifteen Years

After succeeding in passage of a dietetics licensure bill in 1997, the Hawaii Dietetic Association faced a long list of obstacles to gain final implementation of the statute. The Academy partnered with HDA leadership to achieve implementation and this month the Hawaii Department of Health announced approval of the implementation of the dietetics licensure program. The Department of Health Care Assurance reports it plans to begin the process by the end of July.

As the Academy's Let's Move! coordinators continue to champion initiatives among affiliates, a new project is under way that seeks a commitment from additional cities, towns and counties across the U.S.

Regulatory Comments: Academy Solicits Expertise from Members, DPGs

Members have the opportunity to comment on several new regulations and agency initiatives by working within their dietetic practice groups. Regulations and initiatives on which the Academy anticipates comment are regularly updated.

Food Safety Grants

The Food and Drug Administration is accepting grant funding applications from state, local, tribal and territorial governments and nonprofit food safety training entities that collaborate with one or more institutions of higher education for its Cooperative Agreement Program to "facilitate long-term improvements to the national food safety system by building the capacity of state, local, tribal and territorial food safety agencies." FDA anticipates making $800,000 in grant funds available, with an award ceiling of $100,000.

Academy in the News: Soda Ban

New York City's proposed ban on large sodas in entertainment venues has sparked a great deal of debate, including in the news media, and the Academy and its members were well-represented in the coverage. The Academy issued a statement encouraging consumer education as the priority, since there is no science-based conclusion that bans and taxes on food are effective in improving quality of life.

June 30 Deadline: Journal Editor-in-Chief Applications

The Academy is issuing a call for interested applicants for the position of Editor-in-Chief of its flagship scientific journal. The contract position begins in April 2013. Applications must be postmarked no later than June 30.

Through a USDA Team Nutrition grant, the Iowa Department of Education is partnering with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation to implement the "Meet the Challenge!" project. In May, five RD Coaches in Iowa successfully submitted 28 HealthierUS School Challenge award applications.

Interested in slowing the progression of obesity in children? A one-year grant of up to $35,000 is available for a research project that explores lifestyle interventions to reduce the risk of childhood obesity. The application deadline is July 1.
