Farm Bill Passes First Hurdle

The Senate began work on the 2012 Farm Bill (S.3240) last week by taking up two of the more than 200 amendments filed. One amendment, authored by U.S. Senator Rand Paul (Ky.), would have cut SNAP funding by 44 percent in 2013 and by another $322 billion over the next 9 years.

Senate Committee Releases Funding For Important Health Funding Programs

Last week, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Labor, Health and Human Services passed a funding bill supporting programs important to the Academy's mission. Nearly three-quarters of all health-care costs are attributable to chronic disease; many of which are preventable through proper diet and exercise. The committee allocated $280 million for Community Transformation Grants, an increase of $54 million from 2012, to help fund innovated prevention programs around the country.

New Poll Indicates Public Support SNAP Funding

Voters care about reducing government debt and fixing fiscal problems, but indicate cutting SNAP is not the way to solve the problem. According to a new poll conducted by the Food Research and Action Center, 77 percent of voters do not believe that cutting SNAP is the way to reduce government spending.

The Affordable Care Act Has Increased Prevention Services

According to a new report released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the new health care law has helped 14.3 million people on Medicare gain access to at least one preventative service in 2012. These numbers include more than 1 million Americans who have received an annual wellness visit.

Health Exchanges - Is Your State Moving Forward?

The constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act is currently under review by the Supreme Court. The much-anticipated ruling is expected on or after June 25. Despite the uncertainty of the ruling, states are in various stages of activity related to establishing health insurance exchanges. California was the first state to pass legislation after the federal law was passed in 2010. Other states that have moved forward are Colo., Conn., Md., Mass., Nev., Ore., Utah, Vt., Wash. and W.Va.

Academy Member Updates

Academy Joins New National Initiative to End Hunger, Achieve Food Security

The Academy has joined a new nationwide initiative designed to help families obtain adequate amounts of healthful food and reduce the levels of food insecurity in the United States. The collaboration brings together health professionals including registered dietitians; the agriculture and food production industry; and hunger relief professionals. It was announced June 14 at "The Future of Food: Food Security in the 21st Century" conference, co-sponsored by the Academy. This collaboration of the Academy, Feeding America and the National Dairy Council will share expertise and resources, identify new ways of approaching nutrition education and access, and affect the way food-insecure individuals can better nourish themselves and their families.

$35,000 Research Grant

Interested in slowing the progression of obesity in children? A one-year grant of up to $35,000 is available for a research project that explores lifestyle interventions to reduce the risk of childhood obesity. The application deadline is July 1.
