Members' Action Needed on Farm Bill

Senators are expected to cast the first full vote on the Farm Bill (S.3240) on Thursday, June 7. Please help the Academy promote food and nutrition policies within the Farm Bill by sending an Action Alert to your senator. Please note: When you send your Action Alert, do not edit the letter; this ensures your Action Alert is sent successfully to your senator.

Academy's Comments on Large Soda Ban Proposal

New York City has announced plans to ban the sale of sodas and other sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces in restaurants and entertainment venues. In response, the Academy encouraged consumers to be aware of how all beverages fit into their healthful daily eating plan.

Academy Co-Sponsors 'Future of Food' Conference

The Academy is co-sponsoring a June 14 conference in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Washington Post and Slate.com, on "The Future of Food: Food Security for the 21st Century." Co-sponsoring the event with the Academy is the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy. Academy members and leaders will participate in the conference, which will focus on domestic food security against the backdrop of global food challenges. You can watch the conference live online.

House Passes Drug Shortage Bill

Registered dietitians moved one step closer to relief from disruptions of drug shortages, including those found in TPN solutions, when the House of Representatives by a vote of 387 to 5 passed the Prescription Drug User Fee bill May 30 that included aspects of the Access to Life Saving Medications Act (HR 2245). The Senate overwhelming passed its version by 96 to 1 earlier in the month. The two bills will go to conference where differences will be reconciled before heading to the president for signature. The Academy and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition advocated for the passage of the legislation.

HHS Announces New Prevention Grants

The Department of Health and Human Services will make $70 million in small-community grants available as part of the Community Transformation Grant Program included in the prevention and wellness initiative authorized by the Affordable Care Act.

Farm Bill Update

A new Congressional Budget Office analysis has been released for the official Senate Farm Bill, also known as the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act (S. 3240). The analysis revealed that 500,000 households would see monthly food benefits reduced by an average of $90 beginning in fiscal year 2014.

When Academy members meet with state legislators in 2013, they will find about 50 percent of legislators have served for two years or fewer. The 2010 elections resulted in a 29 percent membership turnover in a non-redistricting year nationally for state legislatures.

Medicare's new obesity counseling benefit continues to be the subject of attention. The May Clinical Nutrition Insight offers reactions to the new benefit from several provider perspectives, including the Academy's. While this publication is a subscription newsletter, through arrangements with the publisher, Academy members can access the article for free until July 31.

USDA's MyPlate Celebrates Its First Anniversary

During June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion is celebrating the first anniversary of MyPlate with special blog postings, daily Tweets, a new resource for creating healthy celebrations, MyPlate Happy Birthday coloring pages and other consumer resources. The Academy is among the 90 National Strategic Partners that promote the Dietary Guidelines and MyPlate recommendations. More information and to join the MyPlate First Year Birthday Celebration.

Video and Photos: Presidential Gavel Passing

At a reception at the Academy's Chicago Headquarters, the Academy's 2011-2012 President Sylvia A. Escott-Stump, MA, RD, LDN, symbolically "passed the gavel" of the Academy's presidency to Ethan A. Bergman, PhD, RD, FADA, CD, who will serve as the Academy's 87th president from June 1 until May 31, 2013. Glenna McCollum-Cloud, DMOL, MPH, RD, the Academy's 2012-2013 president-elect, introduced the gavel passing. Escott-Stump and Bergman each made remarks and were welcomed by Academy staff and the Board of Directors. Photos and video of the event have been posted to the Academy's member Facebook page. On June 1, the Academy also announced the members of the 2012-2013 Board of Directors.

Nominations for 2013 Election

The Nominating Committee is accepting nominations for the Academy's 2013 National Election. Nominations for the positions of President-elect and Speaker-elect close August 27. All other nominations are due October 12.

Interested in slowing the progression of obesity in children? A one-year grant of up to $35,000 is available for a research project that explores lifestyle interventions to reduce the risk of childhood obesity. The application deadline is July 1.

The Eat Right Society is a giving society for annual donations totaling $250 or more to the Academy Foundation.
