Despite continued recommendations for increased consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, less than 5 percent of all DRI age and gender subgroups meet recommended dietary fiber intakes. In response, the Academy developed the module "Family of Fibers: Dietary Variety for Maximum Health Benefits" that is free for members and reviews the properties of fibers and how consumption of a variety of fibers provides the maximum health benefits.

The complete archive of the Academy's member publication ADA Times, which was discontinued in 2011, has been relocated and the Academy's Stock Photography Library has been integrated into the member-only Me, Inc. section on Eatright.org.

Journal Photo Contest

The fourth annual Journal Photo Contest is now open. The Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics will be accepting original submissions from Academy members with an eye for photography. The winning entry will be voted on by Academy members at the Journal booth during the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo, to be held October 6 to 9 in Philadelphia, Pa. The theme for this year's contest is "New Perspectives on Food." The submission deadline is August 1.

35th Annual Food Policy Conference

Academy member Karen Ehrens, RD, LRD, vice chair of the Academy's Legislative Public Policy Committee, will be among the speakers at the 35th annual Food Policy Conference, taking place May 17 and 18 in Washington, D.C. The conference is an opportunity for collaboration among the food industry, consumer advocates and the government, and is a key annual gathering for those interested in agriculture, food and nutrition policy. Topics this year will include voter attitude on food and nutrition issues, competitive foods in schools, improving nutrition for competitive foods, food safety and food biotechnology.

The call for nominations for the Academy's 2013 National Election has begun. Nominations for the positions of 2013-2014 President-elect and Speaker-elect are due by August 27. Academy Member Lends Expertise to Successful Hill Briefing

Ellen Griffiths, MPH, RD, LDN, of Rockville, Md., participated in a recent well-attended Capitol Hill briefing on prediabetes. Through two case studies, Ms. Griffiths spoke about the importance of registered dietitians providing medical nutrition therapy and how it helps in preventing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
