Academy Educates Capitol Hill on Diabetes

Members and the Academy's Washington, D.C., staff teamed up last week with the Diabetes Caucus in the House of Representatives and Tethys Bioscience to educate members of Congress and their staffs on the importance of medical nutrition therapy and preventing diabetes. At a Capitol Hill briefing, the panel discussed the effectiveness of MNT in addressing pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

New SNAP Report: Gearing Up for the Farm Bill Debate

The Food and Nutrition Service department within the U.S. Department of Agriculture has released a new summary report on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It contains a summary of the program, up-to-date research and other helpful pieces of information to inform members on the country's largest food program.

Apply for Farm to School Grant

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 created a Farm to School Program to improve access to local, fresh foods in eligible schools. Suggested letters of intent are due May 18 and proposals are due June 15, with award announcements coming in the Fall. If you think your school is eligible, begin the process now.

The Farmers Market Promotion Program offers grants to help improve and expand domestic farmers markets and other direct producer-to-consumer market opportunities in local communities. Approximately $10 million in FMPP grants is available for Fiscal Year 2012.

USDA Releases Survey of WIC Participants

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service has released the "National Survey of WIC Participants II." The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, which employees a significant number registered dietitians, has provided benefits for more than 35 years to low-income pregnant and postpartum women, infants and young children at nutritional risk. The NSWP-II survey was conducted to gather information about participant characteristics, the policies and operations of state and local WIC agencies and the level of improper payments to recipients.

States Move Forward with Health Care Reform before Supreme Court Ruling

States are charged with establishing public insurance exchanges as a part of the Affordable Care Act, providing access to health insurance for those currently uninsured. Since 16 states and the District of Columbia have already authorized implementation of exchanges, either through legislation or executive order, the outcome of these state initiatives will remain uncertain following the Supreme Court ruling, expected in June, on whether the federal law is constitutional. Some states, such as Rhode Island, Maryland and Oregon, may move forward with health-care reform even if the Supreme Court invalidates the Affordable Care Act.

Member Receives University Award

Academy member Christine M. Palumbo, MBA, RD, has been named a recipient of the 2012 St. Catherine University Alumnae Award. Ms. Palumbo is a speaker, writer, media spokesperson, lifestyle counselor and lecturer on nutritional research and professional writing, based in Chicago. The award will be presented at the university's alumnae annual meeting on May 14.

Member's Article Advises Pulmonary Hypertension Specialists on Nutritional Lifestyle

Academy member Donna H. Mueller, PhD, RD, FADA, LDN, an associate professor of nutrition sciences at Drexel University, was asked to contribute an article for the journal Advances in Pulmonary Hypertension on nutrition aspects of the disease. Her article "Ask the Expert: What is a Nutritional Lifestyle?" appears in the journal's Winter 2012 issue and is available online. According to the article's abstract: "Registered dietitians are important members of our patients' team. Dr. Mueller explains how to guide our patients in accessing information for their unique nutritional lifestyle."

Video: Southwest Oat and Black Bean Bake

Visit www.kidseatright.org for a new video on making Southwest Oat and Black Bean Bake. The video is made possible by Kids Eat Right Summit sponsor PepsiCo.

Family Meal Planning and Prep Toolkit

Kids Eat Right's toolkit promoting healthy family behaviors, meal planning and preparation is called "Family Champions. One Change at a Time." The toolkit contains three hands-on cooking workshop presentations targeted to parents and is available to all Kids Eat Right Campaign Volunteers. The toolkit is also available in Spanish. "Family Champions. One Change at a Time" toolkit was made possible by an educational grant from General Mills. Members of the Food and Culinary Professionals and Nutrition Education for the Public dietetic practice groups participated in the development of the toolkit.

Research Grants Deadline Extended

The application deadline has been extended to May 15 for a number of Academy Foundation research grants.

One or multiple grants totaling $200,000 for the development of interactive practice simulations that address the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics' supervised practice competencies are available through the Foundation.
