New Bill Proposes Private Foundation to Fund Food Nutrition and Agriculture Research

The Academy, in collaboration with other partners, was pleased that a major initiative to help fund important research has been introduced in Congress. Leaders of the Senate Agriculture Committee introduced a bill to expand funding for food and agricultural research through the creation of a private research foundation. This new bill will offer significant opportunities for Academy members to have a way to fund their important research.

Celebrate National Public Health Week with Learning Opportunities, Resources

National Public Health Week is April 2-8. The 2012 theme, "A Healthier America Begins Today: Join the Movement!", encourages collaboration within communities to make positive preventive health changes in areas such as healthy eating and active living. Fellowship Program Honors Baker and Dole

In honor of former U.S. Senators Howard Baker and Bob Dole, the Bipartisan Policy Center has established a new fellowship program. The Baker-Dole Leadership Fellows Program will enable talented individuals to work with experienced policymakers at the Bipartisan Policy Center. House Passes Budget

The House of Representatives passed the Ryan budget, which would cut $5.3 trillion over the next ten years. This budget impacts food and nutrition programs through significant funding reductions. The FY2013 Republican Budget Resolution cuts $179.4 billion from farm bill programs over ten years, which if passed by both chambers would eliminate a 2012 Farm Bill.

Supreme Court Hears Arguments on Affordable Care Act

Oral arguments were held last week on legal challenges to the 2010 Affordable Care Act. In their final sessions, the justices tackled the question of what would happen if they ruled the heart of the law, the individual mandate that is its key funding mechanism, unconstitutional.

FDA Addresses Drug Shortages and Antibiotics

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle praised draft sections of a potential Food and Drug Administration user fee reauthorization bill aimed at preventing drug shortages and encouraging the development of new antibiotics, released by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. This unfortunate situation has directly affected members who provide nutrition support to their patients. This important topic will be a focus at the Academy's Public Policy Workshop later in April.

Explore Biomarkers in Nutrition at Conference

The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science is hosting Biomarkers in Nutrition: New Frontiers in Research and Application on April 18.The conference will explore frontiers of research and development in the field of biomarkers, with topics such as innovative use of plasma amino acid profiles for screening for moderate malnutrition, as well as biomarkers of prediabetes, and the emerging field of sarcopenia. CMS Promoted MNT Benefit During National Nutrition Month

For the fourth consecutive year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services shared a message to providers during National Nutrition Month to promote the Medicare MNT benefit. The message encourages physicians to explore the benefits of medical nutrition therapy for patients with diabetes and renal disease. Foundation Scholarships

As the largest provider of dietetics scholarships, the Foundation provides funding to deserving students at all levels of study. More than 1,600 students have been awarded scholarships in the last five years, totaling nearly $2.8 million. Graduate scholarships, dietetic internship scholarships undergraduate (didactic or coordinated) scholarships and dietetic technician scholarships are all available.
