Two Members Co-Produce PBS Special on Farm To School

Farm to School partnerships have flourished in Minnesota, providing a new market for farmers and fresh, local food for students. This program produced by Stephanie Heim, MPH, RD, and Lisa Gemlo, MPH, RD, explores the economic advantages and remaining challenges for businesses, farms, schools and communities working together to improve children's health and education. The National Fruit & Vegetable Alliance Holds Annual Meeting

The National Fruit & Vegetable Alliance (NFVA), a national alliance of public and private partners that includes the Academy as a member, works collaboratively to increase nationwide access to and demand for all forms of fruits and vegetables for improved public health held their annual meeting this week. The success of the member organizations was shared including the increase of salad bars in schools and the More Matters campaign.

Minnesota Holds Successful Legislative Day

Seventy Minnesota Dietetic Association members recently joined forces and met with 46 state legislators about issues such as the Health Insurance Exchange and the importance of dietetics licensure. Speakers included Representative Erin Murphy (Minn.) and Katie Burns, Minnesota Health Insurance Exchange Director. State Policy Representative Ann Erickson chaired the event.

Biomarkers in Nutrition Explored during April 18 Conference

The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science is hosting the conference Biomarkers in Nutrition: New Frontiers in Research and Application. Taking place on Wednesday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, the conference will explore frontiers of research and development in the field of biomarkers, with topics such as innovative use of plasma amino acid profiles for screening for moderate malnutrition, as well as biomarkers of prediabetes, and the emerging field of sarcopenia. An afternoon panel session will examine how these results may translate into interpretable indicators and applicable recommendations.

New Book on Nutrition Approaches and Strategies in Cancer Patients

Kumar, PhD, RD, FADA, director of cancer chemoprevention at Moffitt Cancer Center at the University of South Florida, is the author of a new book, Nutritional Management of Cancer Treatment Effects (Springer 2012). The book provides up-to-date information on novel nutritional approaches and strategies in cancer patients, and describes in detail the individual symptoms related to cancer treatment and how nutritional approaches may be used to alleviate them.

Foundation Scholarships

As the largest provider of dietetics scholarships, the Foundation provides funding to deserving students at all levels of study. More than 1,600 students have been awarded scholarships in the last five years, totaling nearly $2.8 million. Graduate scholarships, dietetic internship scholarships undergraduate (didactic or coordinated) scholarships and dietetic technician scholarships are all available. Eligibility information and an application.

Application Deadline Extended

The deadline has been extended to April 1 to apply for the Foundation's Wimpfheimer-Guggenheim Fund for International Exchange in Nutrition, Dietetics and Management Essay Award.

Named Research Funds

The Foundation's named research funds are available annually to Academy members at all levels of practice. These grants focus on areas such as renal disease, childhood obesity, nutrition and oral health, diabetes medical nutrition therapy, diet and neurological disorders and nutritional epidemiology.
