Progress in Academy Efforts to Expand MNT Coverage

The Academy continues to make progress in working to obtain directly billable reimbursement for registered dietitians for intensive behavioral counseling for obesity and cardiovascular diseases. The Academy's strategy includes a combination of several efforts: this past winter's grassroots mobilization; legal assessments of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' National Coverage Determinations and related statutes and regulations; preparing an official Academy response to regulatory agencies and executive officials; and the development of multiple solutions/paths for driving change.

Member Named University Interim President

Academy member Judith L. Bonner, PhD, MS, RD, executive vice president and provost at the University of Alabama since 2006, has been named the campus's interim president. Previously, she was the university's provost and vice president for academic affairs. "Our outstanding faculty and staff demonstrate their commitment to our students and their success on a daily basis and I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as interim president during this time of transition," she said.

Member Receives Alumni Achievement Award

Academy member Constance G. Mueller, MS, RD, has received the 2012 Alumni Achievement Award from Illinois State University. The award is presented to alumni whose achievements have received favorable statewide, national or international recognition; who have received honors from associations or employers; or whose work has proven beneficial to a pronounced segment of society. Ms. Mueller is the foodservice director for Bloomington (Ill.) School District 87.

Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Award to Member

Academy member Evelyn Crayton, EdD, RD, LD, a member of the Academy's Board of Directors, is the recipient of the 2012 National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Distinguished Alumni Award. She will receive the award at NAFEO's Distinguished Alumni Awards Gala on March 28, in Washington, D.C. This event is a highlight of the National Dialogue on Blacks in Higher Education, to be held March 25 to 28.

Member Appointed to Maine Quality Forum Advisory Council

When Maine's Quality Forum Advisory Council meets in May, Academy member, Marcia Kyle, RD, LD, CDE, will represent the interests of the dietetics profession. Her appointment by Gov. Paul LePage was confirmed by the state legislature on March 13.

Foundation Scholarships

As the largest provider of dietetics scholarships, the Foundation provides funding to deserving students at all levels of study. More than 1,600 students have been awarded scholarships in the last five years, totaling nearly $2.8 million. Graduate scholarships, dietetic internship scholarships undergraduate (didactic or coordinated) scholarships and dietetic technician scholarships are all available. The deadline has been extended to April 1 to apply for the Foundation's Wimpfheimer-Guggenheim Fund for International Exchange in Nutrition, Dietetics and Management Essay Award.

Named Research Funds

The Foundation's named research funds are available annually to Academy members at all levels of practice. These grants focus on areas such as renal disease, childhood obesity, nutrition and oral health, diabetes medical nutrition therapy, diet and neurological disorders and nutritional epidemiology.
