Academy Policy Leaders Discuss Hot Topics

Last week's Public Policy Panel forum focused on three issues that could impact coverage for nutrition services throughout the United States: the Essential Health Benefits Package; an update on the Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act (HR 2741); and the CMS decision on Intensive Behavioral Counseling for Obesity. The Academy recently submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on its proposal for design of the Essential Health Benefits Package.

Academy Works in Anticipation of New Competitive Foods Regulation

The Academy, with the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity, is working to build congressional and grassroots support for the expected U.S. Department of Agriculture regulation establishing reasonable standards for vending, a la carte and other competitive foods in schools. The Academy will be working closely in the coming months with dietetic practice groups, stakeholders and legislators to improve the quality and healthfulness of foods in schools.

Prevention and Public Health Fund Cut after Long Battle

After a two-month fight in Congress, the Prevention and Public Health Fund was cut by $5 billion, which will be spread out over the next 10 years. This reduction of funding directly affects community programs that aim to prevent chronic illnesses through nutrition and physical activity.

Free CMS Webinar: Coverage, Coding, Billing Guidelines

Knowing which preventive services and screenings are covered by Medicare and how to bill for such services correctly can maximize reimbursement and reduce staff time spent correcting claims. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will hold a free webinar March 20 that will review coverage, coding and billing guidelines for diabetes screening tests, diabetes self-management training and medical nutrition therapy under Medicare.

2012 National Election Closes March 3

Members have until March 3 to vote in the Academy's national election. All members who vote will be entered in a drawing to win a free Academy membership. Election results will be announced in early March and individuals who are elected take office June 1.

The International Foodservice Manufacturers Association has announced the 2012 recipients of the prestigious Silver Plate Awards, presented to operators in the foodservice industry. Nine Silver Plates are awarded each year and the 2012 group includes two Academy members.

New NIH Website on Drug Abuse

A new, easy-to-read website on drug abuse designed for adults with a low reading literacy level (eighth grade or below) has been launched by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health. The site, which provides plain-language information on neuroscience, drug abuse prevention and treatment, is also a resource for adult literacy educators. The site also uses a website design and features that are easy to use, including animated videos that explain the science of addiction and how drugs affect the brain.

Interactive Parent Workshops Help Families Improve Health

The Academy's Kids Eat Right RD-Parent Empowerment Project is in full swing in 12 schools in three communities: Chicago, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Approximately 130 parents have completed at least one of the monthly interactive parent workshops and are enjoying hands-on cooking activities and discussions about ways to help their families eat more healthfully. The project is being conducted in partnership with Healthy Children, Healthy Futures, supported by an educational grant from MetLife Foundation.

Healthy Breakfast Mini-Grant Opportunity

Thirty-five mini-grants of $200 each are available for Kids Eat Right Campaign Volunteers. Details and an application.
