Competition Launched to Recognize Efforts in Reducing Childhood Obesity

Let's Move! Faith and Communities (LMFC) has announced a prize competition, "Communities on the Move Video Challenge," which will provide recognition to faith- and community-based institutions and other nonprofit organizations that are enhancing LMFC's mission to reverse the trend of childhood obesity. Academy members are encouraged to create videos for this project to share how your communities are moving.

The Academy will shine a spotlight on advocacy at the 2012 Public Policy Workshop, April 15 to 17 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Va. President Releases 2013 Budget Request

President Obama has released his 2013 budget proposal, which includes funding for nutrition and food programs and agencies that support the Academy's mission. The Academy's Policy Initiative and Advocacy team is closely monitoring the budget proposal and how it would affect registered dietitians.

The Call for Abstracts for the 2012 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo, Oct. 6 to 9 in Philadelphia, Pa., will be open for just one more day. The deadline is Thursday, February 23, to submit online for either a Poster or a Research and Practice Innovation session (10-minute oral presentation). All abstracts are peer-reviewed.

Vote in 2012 Elections

Members have until March 3 to vote in the Academy's national election. All members who vote will be entered in a drawing to win a free Academy membership. Election results will be announced in early March and individuals who are elected take office June 1.

Hall of Fame Member

Academy member Teresa Rondeau-Ambroz, MPH, RD, LD, will be inducted into the Marketing Disease Prevention in America Hall of Fame. The inaugural class includes marketing and public health professionals who have made substantial strides in improving awareness of childhood obesity. Ms. Ambrose is a health and wellness manager at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation. She will be honored in March as part of the Communicating Childhood Obesity Prevention and Policy Conference.

Journal Gets Updated Design

Beginning with the March issue, the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics unveils an updated print design. Features include a more succinct table of contents; updated icons for ancillary material, such as CPE, podcasts and online-only extras; an updated, bolder color scheme for Practice Applications, Research and From the Academy sections; and much more. Thirty-five mini-grants of $200 each are available for Kids Eat Right Campaign Volunteers. Details and an application.

Volunteers Making a Difference in Iowa

Kids Eat Right Campaign Volunteer registered dietitians are working in 40 schools in Iowa to establish Energy Balance Teams to improve the schools' wellness environment and assist in applying for a Bronze-level award through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's HealthierUS School Challenge. The RDs will work with schools for the entire 2012 calendar year, improving wellness policies, assisting in menu revisions and helping schools identify new community partners to meet nutrition and physical activity standards to be eligible for an award.
