First Lady Acknowledges Registered Dietitians at Florida Let's Move! Event

At a celebration of the second anniversary of Let's Move! on Saturday, February 11, First Lady Michelle Obama was joined by Florida Dietetic Association members and the public at an event at Northland, A Church Distributed, in Longwood, Fla. In her remarks, Mrs. Obama acknowledged the contributions of registered dietitians as she encouraged faith-based organizations to support healthy lifestyles, "There are so many natural leaders in our congregations who are just waiting to be tapped ... Maybe there's a nurse or a dietitian, a community health worker, who's eager to share their expertise."

Grassroots Excellence Award Winner Announced

The Academy's Legislative and Public Policy Committee and Political Action Committee are pleased to announce that Kay Mavko, MS, RD, LD, of Columbus, Ohio, has been chosen to receive the Academy's 2012 Award for Grassroots Excellence. Her award will be presented during the Academy's Public Policy Workshop, April 15 to 17, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Va.

Academy Supporter Receives Physical IT Leadership Award

The Academy congratulates Russell Leftwich, MD, chief medical informatics officer for the Tennessee Office of eHealth Initiatives, for receiving the Physician IT Leadership Award from the Health Information Management Systems Society. In 2009, Dr. Leftwich helped the Academy secure support from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, recognizing that food allergies are critical data to be included in electronic health records.

New Website Seeks Recommendations for SNAP Improvements

The Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress has launched a website called Snaptohealth.org to help identify ways to improve the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Congress has taken action through payroll tax extension legislation to avert a proposed 27.4 percent reduction in Medicare payments to physicians and other providers, including registered dietitians.

Report on Obesity Costs

According to a new study released by the Trust for America's Health, if obesity rates were reduced by 5 percent (which is also a five-year goal of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Community Transformation Grant program) the United States could save $29.8 billion over five years and $158.1 billion over 10 years. The report also gives a state-by-state summary and progress report on the Community Transformation Grant program.

Webinar on Bariatric Surgery

Traditionally, bariatric patients received their nutrition guidance from the surgeon or bariatric nurse practitioner. The February 22 webinar Bariatric Surgery: Time to Standardize Nutritional Care will present an overview of the procedures and their impact on nutritional status and present rationale for standardizing the nutritional care of bariatric patients. Where there is no empirical data, recommendations should be based on "expert opinion" and the registered dietitian is the "nutrition expert."

Vote in 2012 Elections

Voting in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' national election is now open. Vote between February 1 and March 3. All members who vote will entered in a drawing to win a free Academy membership. Election results will be announced in early March, and individuals who are elected take office June 1.
