Academy Submits Comments on Regulatory Approach for Essential Health Benefits

The Academy submitted comments in response to the Department of Health and Human Services' request for comments on the specific regulatory approach outlined in the December 16, 2011, "Essential Health Benefits Bulletin." The Academy advocated for RD-provided nutrition services to be included as essential benefits within four of the 10 benefit categories, and suggested ways to improve the regulatory approach to ensure essential coverage was equitably balanced with affordability.

Academy Submits Comments on Approaches to Reducing Sodium Consumption

The Academy recently submitted comments reiterating its support for reducing sodium consumption to 2010 Dietary Guidelines-recommended levels and the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine and the National Salt Reduction Initiative.

Academy Meets With Surgeon General as Part of USBC

The U.S. Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding marked its first anniversary in January. Academy member Jeanne Blankenship, MS, RD, the Academy's vice president for policy initiatives and advocacy and chair of the United States Breastfeeding Committee, met with Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, MD, MBA, to discuss progress on the action items released in the report. Blankenship and other USBC delegates asked Benjamin for assistance in building partnerships with faith-based and community organizations in addition to identifying other opportunities for collaboration. Blankenship serves as a member representative to USBC through the Academy's Alliance program.

Traditionally, bariatric patients received their nutrition guidance from the surgeon or bariatric nurse practitioner. The February 22 webinar Bariatric Surgery: Time to Standardize Nutritional Care will present an overview of the procedures and their impact on nutritional status and present rationale for standardizing the nutritional care of bariatric patients. Where there is no empirical data, recommendations should be based on "expert opinion" and the registered dietitian is the "nutrition expert."

Update on Energy Balance 4 Kids with Play

The Foundation's Energy Balance 4 Kids with Play initiative is starting strong in its second semester in West Contra Costa schools in California. Six RD Coaches are teaching the Energy Balance curriculum to third- through fifth-graders and working with Playworks coaches to increase students' nutrition and physical activity knowledge to improve their eating and activity behaviors. Each school soon will apply for a Bronze-level award through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's HealthierUS School Challenge.

The Foundation's named research funds are available annually to Academy members at all levels of practice. These grants focus on areas such as renal disease, childhood obesity, nutrition and oral health, diabetes medical nutrition therapy, diet and neurological disorders and nutritional epidemiology.
