Senator Sanders Introduces Older Americans Act

On January 26, Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) introduced language on the Older Americans Act Reauthorization (S. 2037). This legislation was originally enacted in 1965 to provide comprehensive assistance to seniors enabling them to remain independent in their homes and communities. The Academy supports the importance of Sen. Sanders' comments and will work hard over the coming months to support passage of the Older Americans Act Reauthorization.

Academy Is There as USDA Sets New School Meal Standards

On January 25, First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack unveiled new nutrition standards for school meals for the first time in 15 years. Academy President Sylvia A. Escott-Stump attended the event, where it was announced that new standards will now require schools to offer well-rounded meals that include a range of foods over the course of the week.

Academy Staff Educates Members of Congress on Prediabetes and MNT Bill

Four members of Congress - Dan Benishek (Mich.), Patrick Tiberi (Ohio), John Lewis (Ga.) and Rosa DeLauro (Conn.) - were educated by Academy staff members on the importance of medical nutrition therapy for people with prediabetes. Legislation before the House of Representatives - HR 2741 - would reimburse registered dietitians through Medicare for providing MNT to those identified as being pre-diabetic. In addition to education, the members of Congress were asked to support the bill.

New Report: Role of Local Food Systems in U.S. Farm Policy

The Congressional Research Service recently released a report on "The Role of Local Food Systems in U.S. Farm Policy." This report explains that there is no established definition for a "local food," with varying meanings between consumers and producers and a wide range of farm businesses may be involved in local food production.

2012 Farm Bill Update

The House and Senate are expected take different approaches and timetables on reauthorizing the Farm Bill. The Senate Agriculture Committee has stated it will begin hearings in February and bill language should be complete in March. The House is not expected to start hearings until late March into April. This version of the bill may not be complete until May.

USDA's National Farmers Market Directory Now Offers SNAP Search

The National Farmers Market Directory has made significant enhancements to its system. Users can now search for a market anywhere in the United States based on product availability, location and nutrition assistance programs such as SNAP, WIC and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP).

New Grants Available at USDA Farm to School

The grants section of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm to School website has been updated to include an extensive list of Farm to School-related funding opportunities by USDA and other federal agencies. The information is organized by target audience, which includes farmers, schools and community.

Webinar on Bariatric Surgery

Traditionally, bariatric patients received their nutrition guidance from the surgeon or bariatric nurse practitioner. The February 22 webinar Bariatric Surgery: Time to Standardize Nutritional Care will present an overview of the procedures and their impact on nutritional status and present rationale for standardizing the nutritional care of bariatric patients. Where there is no empirical data, recommendations should be based on "expert opinion" and the registered dietitian is the "nutrition expert."
