New School Meal Standards Unveiled

Academy President Sylvia A. Escott-Stump, MA, RD, LDN, attended the announcement on Wednesday, January 25, by First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's new and improved nutrition standards for school lunches. These are the first major changes in school meals in more than 15 years. The announcement was made at a school in the Fairfax County, Va., school district; the district's food and nutrition services director is Academy member Penny E. McConnell, MS, RD, SNS.

At MiPlato Event, Academy Leaders to Meet With First Lady

Past-president Judith C. Rodriguez, PhD, RD, FADA, LDN, will represent the Academy on Thursday, January 26, at a private meeting in Tampa, Fla., with First Lady Michelle Obama and a small group of Latino leaders, discussing how the Academy is helping achieve the goals of the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative. Members of the Florida Dietetic Association, including Academy Board member Lucille Beseler, MS, RD, and FDA President Stephanie Norris, MS, RD, LDN, will then attend an event promoting MiPlato, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's new Spanish-language MyPlate food icon.

Academy Submits Comments to NQF on Perinatal Quality Measures

The Academy submitted comments to the National Quality Forum regarding its consensus standards applicable to perinatal and reproductive health. The Academy recommended two additional quality measures related to nutritional counseling for women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus and gestational weight gain.

CDC Assesses Community-based Obesity Strategies

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion is engaged in a study of "Pre-Evaluation Assessments of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Programs and Policies."

HRSA Releases Call for Applications: Healthy Weight Collaborative

The Health Resources and Services Administration recently announced a call for applications for community teams to participate in phase two of the Healthy Weight Collaborative, a national quality-improvement effort to test and spread evidence-based interventions to prevent and treat obesity. This phase will bring together 40 multi-sector teams, including primary care, public health and the community, from across the country to engage in a virtual learning community between February 2012 and February 2013.

Conferees Named to Medicare Reimbursement Bill

Congress has named the members of the conference committee that will work to extend a number of tax provisions including the important "Doc Fix" - the reimbursement rate that health care providers receive through Medicare and Medicaid.

White House Report Highlights Exchange Progress

According to the White House, 28 states and the District of Columbia are currently establishing health benefits exchanges that will serve as a marketplace for individuals and small-business policies. Some of the remaining states have halted their progress, waiting to see how the Supreme Court will rule in March on the constitutionality of the individual mandate.

Food Safety Student Challenge

The Foundation has a new scholarship opportunity for students. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation/ConAgra Foods' Food Safety Student Challenge was developed around the Home Food Safety campaign. Nine scholarships of $4,500 are available. Grace L. Ostenso Nutrition and Public Policy Fellowship

The application deadline is February 15 for the Grace L. Ostenso Nutrition and Public Policy Fellowship. The fellowship supports an Academy member's participation in the Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows Program, spending one year in Washington, D.C., working as a special assistant in a government or legislative position that would benefit from scientific and engineering input.
