Senator to Introduce Older Americans Act Reauthorization Bill

Bernie Sanders (Vt.), chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging, announced January 6 that he will introduce a bill to reauthorize the Older Americans Act when Congress comes back in session on January 23. Sanders said, "We must redouble our commitment to help seniors live safely and comfortably in their own homes and communities." Originally enacted in 1965, the law was the first of its kind to assist seniors with living independently in their homes and communities.

Supreme Court to Address Health Care Reform

Twenty-six states are seeking to overturn the mandatory state expansion of the Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act. The states claims the federal government can't force Medicaid program expansion. If the Supreme Court takes the states' side, the ruling could limit whether the federal government can use money as an incentive for the states to act on any issue. Related information.

Increased Disadvantaged Population Eligible for SNAP/WIC

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service has released a report that features updated estimates of the population eligible for USDA Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits from 2000 through 2009. The report estimates the average monthly WIC eligible population totaled 15.1 million in 2009, a 6.4 percent increase from the estimated 14.2 million eligible in 2008.

During the recent American Farm Bureau Federation convention, delegates from every state adopted proposals for the 2012 Farm Bill.

Family Meal Planning and Prep Toolkit and Mini-Grants

Kids Eat Right is launching a new toolkit promoting healthy family behaviors, meal planning and preparation called "Family Champions. One Change at a Time." The toolkit contains three hands-on cooking workshop presentations targeted to parents. It is available to all Kids Eat Right Campaign Volunteers. To support the toolkit's use, 30 mini-grants of $250 are available.
