Intensive Behavioral Counseling for Cardiovascular Disease: CMS Announces Final Decision

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has made a determination to cover an annual visit for intensive behavioral counseling for cardiovascular disease to promote a healthy diet. Despite ADA's advocacy to allow registered dietitians to provide and directly bill for nutrition services provided through this new Medicare preventive service, the decision ultimately limits the services to the primary care setting. RDs should work collaboratively with primary care providers to provide counseling; however, the services would be billed under the physician.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service has released a report that estimates the number of all Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations participants certified for free school meals jumped over the past year.

To solicit broad public input on the design of the Essential Health Benefits package required by the Affordable Care Act, the Department of Health and Human Services is holding listening sessions across the country. ADA members have attended sessions to provide comments on behalf of ADA, stating the case for including medical nutrition therapy services provided by registered dietitians.

Family of Fibers Online Learning Module

Despite continued recommendations for increased consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, less than 5 percent of all DRI age and gender subgroups meet recommended dietary fiber intakes. In response, ADA and the International Life Science Institute – North America developed the module "Family of Fibers: Dietary Variety for Maximum Health Benefits" that is free for ADA members and reviews the properties of fibers and how consumption of a variety of fibers provides the maximum health benefits.

Healthy Snacking Toolkit RD Mini-Grants Awarded

Twenty-five RDs were selected to receive a mini-grant to provide presentations in their communities from the Kids Eat Right Healthy Snacking toolkit. Recipients of the $200 mini-grants will give two presentations from the Healthy Breakfast and Healthy Snacking toolkits in schools and communities between December 1 and March 31, 2012.
