On the Pulse of Public Policy

Like No Other Congress

Although Congress's deficit reduction Super Committee is tight-lipped about its meetings, its members have shared the information that the assignment is very hard, with more difficult actions to come. ADA staff, along with other stakeholders, are meeting with key members of Congress and their staff to provide input on the value of nutrition programs and services. Issues discussed in these meetings include child nutrition, SNAP, Medicare, agriculture, diabetes, prevention, food safety and older Americans, to name a few.

ADA Board Shines at National Food Policy Conference

Two members of ADA's Board of Directors - Public Member Joseph Derochowski, MBA, and ADA President Sylvia A. Escott-Stump, MA, RD, LDN - contributed to the success of the recent National Food Policy Conference. Mr. Derochowski provided insight into consumers' food choices and purchases - necessary information to drive behavior change. Ms. Escott-Stump led a discussion on the need for services and nutrition programs to keep older Americans healthy.

IOM Workshop on Healthy Aging

Past ADA President Nancy S. Wellman, PhD, RD, FADA, was one of the panel members in a recent Institute of Medicine public workshop on "Nutrition and Healthy Aging in the Community."

Member Named Early Career Award Winner

ADA member Laura L. Bellows, PhD, MPH, RD, a researcher and extension specialist in the department of food science and human nutrition at Colorado State University, has been named by President Obama as one of 94 recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. It is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.
