ADA's Chief Executive Office Patricia Babjak joined leaders of national organizations in a letter urging the Super Committee of Congress to continue to fund programs that provide return on investment while improving the health of Americans. ADA supports that budget reductions are necessary for a healthy economy and asks that the Super Committee looks at the evidence.

ADA Participates in Global Diet and Physical Activity Communication Summit

The International Food Information Council Foundation's Global Diet and Physical Activity Communications Summit "Insights to Motivate Healthful, Active Lifestyles" provided expert insights and best practices for the use of science-based, behavior-focused communications in order to motivate individuals and families to achieve healthful, active lifestyles, with the goal of helping to reduce the incidence of NCDs. Two past ADA presidents, Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, LD, FADA, and Nancy Wellman, PhD, RD, FADA, were featured speakers at the event, which was also attended by ADA staff members. The summit was held September 12, simultaneously with the historic 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases.

Diabetes Services Order Form Is Updated

More than 25 percent of those 65 years and older have diabetes, and yet both DSME/T and MNT have been historically underutilized Medicare benefits. In response, the American Dietetic Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educators have jointly developed the Diabetes Services Order Form, which provides an easy and convenient way for physicians and qualified non-physician practitioners to refer their Medicare patients with diabetes for MNT and DSMT services. The form was first developed in 2005 and has recently been updated.
