Super Committee Could Affect Nutrition Programs

The twelve-member Congressional Super Committee will begin next week to cut $1.5 trillion in spending mandated by the debt ceiling bill agreement. If Congress fails to act by the November 23 deadline, automatic across-the-board cuts will take place including to the defense budget.

ADA Prepares Comments on CMS Proposed Coverage Decisions

ADA is drafting responses to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Studies regarding the recently issued Proposed Coverage Decision Memoranda for Intensive Behavioral Counseling for Cardiovascular Disease and for Obesity. ADA's responses highlight the extensive evidence supporting the effectiveness and cost savings of RD-provided interventions and reiterate the United States Preventive Services Task Force's recommendations for RD-provided counseling to promote a healthy diet in adults.

Patient Profile Recommendations for Weight Loss Medications

As part of the Obesity Care Continuum, ADA recently contributed to recommendations to the Food and Drug Administration regarding appropriate patient profile for prescribing weight loss medications. The recommendations focus on risk for side effects and assuring that obesity medications are prescribed to appropriate patients. The Obesity Care Continuum consists of ADA, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Obesity Action Coalition and the Obesity Society.
