Members Asked to Take Action to Support Obesity Coverage

ADA has partnered with the Obesity Society, Obesity Action Coalition and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery to advocate for inclusion of obesity treatment services. ADA members are asked to contact their members of Congress and urge them to sign a letter from Rep. Ed Towns (D.-N.Y.) to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, asking that comprehensive obesity treatment services be included in the essential benefits package.

Reducing TPN and Drug Shortage: Congressional Action

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D.-Colo.), chairwoman of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, recently introduced HR 2245, the Preserving Access to Life-Saving Medications Act of 2011. ADA staff will be meeting with Rep. DeGette's staff in the coming weeks to offer assistance in garnering support and educating members on Capitol Hill.

Building upon the success of the 2009 project "Evaluating Healthy People, Places and Practices in the Community," the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion will be evaluating the use and integration of Healthy People 2020 goals and objectives in community initiatives.

ADA Submits Comments on Healthy Incentives Pilot and Child Nutrition Database

ADA has submitted comments supporting information collections for the Healthy Incentives Pilot Evaluation and the Child Nutrition Database. The HIP Evaluation will allow a determination of the effectiveness of the pilot's incentive structure to encourage increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.

ADA Advocates for Increased Consumer Access in Restaurant Menu Labeling Comments

ADA submitted two sets of comments July 5 concerning vending machine labeling requirements and menu labeling requirements. The Food and Drug Administration had requested comments regarding labeling requirements mandated through the Affordable Care Act. ADA's comments support the use of the new labeling requirements and provide guidance on accuracy of nutrient information, uniform applicability and the need to educate consumers about nutritional intake.

The Dietary Managers Association's members recently voted to approve its name change to the Association of Nutrition and Foodservice Professionals, effective January 1, 2012. Prior to the name change, ADA's Board of Directors forwarded a letter to the Dietary Managers Association stating that identifying DMA members as "nutrition and food service professionals" is a misleading and overly broad characterization of DMA's membership.

Senate Confirms Member to Health Commission

ADA member Luz Alba Ruiz, MHSN, RD, LD, recently was nominated by the governor of Puerto Rico and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on the Puerto Rico Food and Nutrition Commission. Ms. Ruiz is an instructor in the dietetic internship program in the School of Health Professions at the University of Puerto Rico, secretary of the Alianza para Obesidad Pediatrica (Pediatric Obesity Alliance) and a lecturer at seminars and conferences for nutrition practitioners and other health professionals.

Healthy Breakfast Toolkit and Mini-Grants

The Kids Eat Right program will offer a new toolkit in the fall for Campaign Volunteers promoting healthy breakfasts. To support use of the toolkit, 40 mini-grants of $200 are available.
