ADA Focusing on Older Americans Act

The U.S. Senate's Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions' Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging recently held a hearing to discuss the growing problem of senior hunger and ways the Older Americans Act helps address this issue. ADA's Healthy Aging and Dietetics in Health-care Communities DPGs have been working on the reauthorization of the OAA, and ADA staff and members provided input into comments made at the hearing.

ADA Attends Congressional Briefing on Sports Nutrition

The Dietary Supplement Caucus held a congressional briefing June 15 on Capitol Hill on "Sports Nutrition: The Science and Safety of Dietary Supplements" that was attended by ADA staff. Presentations included information on the nutrient needs of athletes, particularly while training. ADA frequently collaborates with the Council for Responsible Nutrition, one of the sponsors of the briefing.

Member Shares Expertise on Hunger and Nutrition With USDA

Minnesota member Katie M. Wahl, RD, responded to a White House request to meet with Catherine Woteki, undersecretary for research, education and economics at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to discuss food support and security. This productive session gave the undersecretary a perspective from the field on the health impact for food-insecure people.

Farm Bill Updates

The Senate Agriculture Committee held its second hearing on "Farm Bill Accountability: The Importance of Measuring Performance, While Eliminating Duplication and Waste" to evaluate the use of taxpayer dollars in USDA programs and to ensure that they are cost-effective and achieving the desired results.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced the availability of $10 million to establish and evaluate comprehensive workplace programs to improve the health of American workers.

IOM Issues Recommendations for Preventing Obesity in Early Childhood

ADA staff and members attended the release of a report from the Institute of Medicine that outlines evidence-based strategies that affect child-care centers for promoting physical activity and healthy eating among children younger than age 5. Several ADA members were members of the IOM's expert panel.

New Videos to Assist People with Diabetes

A new series of videos to help people make lifestyle changes and cope with diabetes has been announced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Diabetes Education Program.
