CMS Division Adopts ADA's Therapeutic Diet Recommendations

The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently released revisions that adopt ADA's recommended definitions and interpretations related to therapeutic diets, mechanically altered diets and nutritional supplements to its Resident Assessment Instrument Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0, which affect quality of care to residents in long-term care and is directly tied to reimbursement of services provided.

House Committee Cuts Agriculture Spending

The House Committee on Appropriations has approved the Fiscal Year 2012 Agriculture Appropriations bill, which will fund many programs within the U.S. Department of Agriculture and related agencies. While the legislation approved $125.5 billion in discretionary and mandatory funding, cutting more than $7 billion from President Obama's request, ADA will continue to work with House committee members on issues aligned with the Association's mission and values.

House Appropriations Report Contains Incorrect Information about WIC

ADA is working with key stakeholders including the National WIC Association to correct an error that appears in a summary report by the House Appropriations Committee that indicates administrative costs for WIC are above 40 percent. According to the USDA, administrative costs for WIC are actually about 9 percent. One possible explanation could be that important programs like breast-feeding and nutrition education might be included in the report.

Last Call for International Congress Submissions

The deadline is June 30 to submit abstracts and session/workshop proposals for the 16th International Congress of Dietetics, to be held in Sydney, Australia, in September 2012. The Congress's theme - "LEAP: Leadership, Evidence and Advancing Practice" - will focus on diversity and new directions in dietetics.
