New USDA Graphic Symbol

On June 2, ADA representatives attended the official unveiling of the U.S. government's new graphic symbol of nutritional advice for consumers contained in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The new graphic will be a useful and intuitive way for people to eat well and improve their health, especially with the expert individualized advice provided by a registered dietitian.

2012 House Agriculture Appropriations

On May 23, the House Appropriations Committee released the subcommittee draft of the FY 2012 Agriculture Appropriations Bill. The proposed reductions include $17.2 billion in discretionary funding, a reduction of more than $2.6 billion from last year's level or $5 billion below President Obama's budget request for the programs.

New Journal Podcast on Prion Diseases

The June issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association includes an article authored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Joseph Y. Abrams, MPH, discussing travel, hunting and eating venison in the context of prion diseases, including bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or "Mad Cow Disease"), variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and chronic wasting disease (CWD).

USDA Updates Safe Cooking Temperature Recommendations

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is updating its recommendation for safely cooking pork, steaks, roasts and chops. USDA recommends cooking all whole cuts of meat to 145 degrees Fahrenheit as measured with a food thermometer placed in the thickest part of the meat, then allowing the meat to rest for three minutes before carving or consuming.

Champions for Healthy Kids Grant Recipients

The ADA Foundation, with the General Mills Foundation and the President's Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, has announced this year's 50 recipients of $10,000 Champions for Healthy Kids grants. This is the ninth year of the program, which makes grants available annually to nonprofit organizations that develop innovative nutrition and physical activity programs for youth and which enlist the expertise of a registered dietitian.
