Comments on Meal Patterns in Schools

ADA has submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on new meal patterns for schools. These comments were crafted with significant input from leaders from the School Nutrition Services, Public Health/Community Nutrition and Hunger and Environmental Nutrition DPGs. The Pediatric Nutrition DPG provided expertise in child care standards.

Continued Push for White House Conference on Food and Nutrition

ADA representatives met last week with U.S. Rep. James McGovern (D.-Mass.), chief sponsor of House bill 1382 that would direct the president to call a White House Conference on Food and Nutrition. ADA has pledged to help get this bill - which has bipartisan support - passed. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled to identify strategies, including how to garner White House support.


Rep. Jackson Lee: Continue the Fight Despite Budget Challenges

In a recent meeting with U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D.-Texas), the Congresswoman encouraged ADA representatives to "remind members of Congress to take the moral high ground and do what is right" in addressing issues like child obesity and hunger, despite federal budget cuts and possible program eliminations.

Texas Dietetic Association Leaders Meet with Lieutenant Governor

When Texas Dietetic Association President-elect Karen Beathard, MS, RD, LD, and members Stacy Fisher, RD, LD, and Adrien Paczosa, RD, LD, met recently with Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, they expected a brief discussion. But the meeting - covering key issues including health care reform and childhood obesity and how registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, registered are critical to improving the health of Texans - lasted nearly an hour.

First ADAPAC Top Donors Open Forum

ADA's Political Action Committee recently held its first Open Forum for donors who contributed more than $250 to ADAPAC in 2011. ADAPAC Chair Cindy Wolfram, RD, members of the ADAPAC Board of Directors and ADA staff answered questions on topics ranging from state licensure to how ADA chooses its elected officials to which political candidates to support.

Congress Passes 2011 Budget Bill

Congress voted last week to keep the government going through the end of September, making cuts to programs which include WIC, agriculture and nutrition research. ADA supports the fact that reductions must be made for the overall health of the economy, but maintains that cuts must be made fairly.
