Food Safety Amendment Fails

Rep. Betty McCollum (D.-Minn.), a champion for ADA in Congress, recently introduced an amendment in the House Budget Committee that would ensure the Food and Drug Administration was adequately funded to protect the nation's food supply, prevent food-borne illnesses and properly investigate outbreaks when they do occur. Although the amendment failed, Rep. McCollum will remain committed to ensuring a safe food supply.

Maine Dietetic Association Moves Forward on Public Policy

Registered dietitians were in the forefront of discussions April 4 with the Maine state Department of Health and Human Services, thanks to the efforts of the Maine Dietetic Association. "The Commissioner is supportive of the RD as the only evidence-based food and nutrition expert and understands scope creep," according to MDA State Policy Representative Marcy Kyle, RD.

ADA and Journal Support Minority Health Month

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Minority Health has dedicated April to raising awareness of the need to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations and to developing health policies and programs to help eliminate health disparities. ADA supports National Minority Health Month; and Elsevier, the publisher of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, has announced ADA's support to subscribers of Elsevier's 1,800 publications, with a reach of more than 1 million health professionals and media.

Nutrition Care Manual Webinar for Students

The ADA Student Advisory Committee teamed recently with ADA's Publications and Resources Team to host a Nutrition Care Manual webinar. More than 550 students and interns participated in the webinar, which demonstrated the NCM and Pediatric NCM as a knowledge- and research-based resource with standardized language and practice guidelines, practical uses in the field, navigation and features overview, site demonstration, sample case study assignment and questions and answers.

ADAF Grant Award Applications Are Due May 16

  • The Karen Lechowich Continuing Education Award assists new ADA members (less than five years) to attend the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo. Up to two awards may be given each year.

  • Proposals for the Ann A. Hertzler Research Grant should address the nutrition care for treatment of children who are overweight. The seed grant is intended to gather preliminary data to enable further funding. Projects should focus on implementation of the Evidence-Based Pediatric Weight Management Nutrition Practice Guidelines.
