Kentucky Moves to Require Licensure for Diabetes Educators

Gov. Steve Beshear signed Kentucky's Diabetes Educators Licensure statute on March 16. In Kentucky, licensed dietitians will still be able to practice dietetics, including counseling clients with diabetes, without taking the Core Concepts Course to become a Licensed Diabetes Educator. The law requires a license to practice diabetes education, a move supported by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). What does this mean for registered dietitians?

ADA Meets with USDA Under Secretary on Food Safety

ADA President Judith C. Rodriguez, PhD, RD, FADA, LDN, and ADA member Missy M. Cody, PhD, RD, attended a meeting in Washington, DC, on March 21 with USDA Under Secretary Elisabeth Hagen. Also in attendance were representatives from American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Family Physicians. Opportunities to collaborate on the food safety were discussed. Dr. Hagen highlighted USDA's upcoming Food Safety Program with the ad council, which will be launched this summer.

New Food Security Tool Launched

ADA representatives were invited to attend the March 24 launch of Feeding America's new anti-hunger tracking tool that shows where food insecurity occurs in the United States. Map the Meal Gap indicates that more than 50 million people - over 16 percent of the U.S. population - are unsure where their next meal will be coming from.

Representatives from ADA, the Obesity Society, Obesity Action Coalition and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery met with the head of the Food and Drug Administration's drug division last week to discuss obesity medications.

Antibiotic Resistance and Residue Work Group Members Named

ADA's Legislative and Public Policy Committee was asked by the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition DPG to consider supporting the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, or PAMTA in the last Congress. The legislation was aimed at addressing the growing problem of antibiotic resistance due to overuse in both human medicine and animal agriculture and is expected to be reintroduced in the current Congress. LPPC determined that additional information and scientific review were needed since ADA does not have a policy or position statement on antibiotic resistance or residues.

The Congressional Black Caucus Health Foundation in collaboration with the National Minority Quality Forum has launched a new U.S. Diabetes Index - the standard by which diabetes in this country will be measured. ADA staff members attended a congressional briefing to unveil the index.
