The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases led a federal work group that has identified research opportunities with the greatest potential to benefit the millions of Americans who are living with or at risk for diabetes and its complications. Grants for Childhood Obesity Research

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention seeks grant applications to integrate primary care and public health approaches to prevent and reduce childhood obesity. Eligible applicants include public and private institutions of higher education, nonprofit and for-profit organizations, research institutions, state and local governments and others. CDC anticipates a total of $5,250,000 in available grant funds.

Budget Battle Continues

Both House Republicans and Senate Democrats are dissatisfied with piecemeal budget victories and are ready to look at the big picture. Some members are starting to push back, unwilling to take what they see as a disproportionate share of the cuts. In a bipartisan effort, the House Agriculture Committee sent a letter to Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R.-Wis.) expressing its concern over the impact of reductions, both current and future.

Consumer Warnings about Tainted Illegal Products

Federal regulators are warning consumers about tainted, dangerous products that are marketed as dietary supplements. These fraudulent products can cause serious injury or death. FDA has created an informative and consumer-friendly website with video, articles and other materials highlighting that these tainted illegal products could be harmful or fatal. Materials are also available in Spanish and Portuguese.

Vote for Recipes for Healthy Kids

Voting is now open in First Lady Michelle Obama's Recipes for Healthy Kids competition. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced 15 semifinalists for the competition, for which many ADA members led creativity teams. Voting ends May 15. Finalists will have a national cook-off in the summer.

Case-Sensitive: Important Reminder for Logging Into Member Website

Some members have reported difficulty logging into ADA's member website. The reason may be that the Association's new system requires passwords to be case-sensitive. When logging in, members should enter their ID or user name and password, then click "Login." A new screen will appear, prompting users to enter their e-mail address in the box provided. Then click "Go," and the log-in process to ADA's member site will be complete.

Members Urged to Get Active for ADA and Themselves

The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition encourages Americans to take the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award challenge, with a goal of getting one million Americans active. Individuals, schools, organizations and groups of all sorts are encouraged to participate. ADA's group name is ADA and the group number is 98851. The program encourages 30 minutes of activity at least five days a week for six out of eight weeks. Those who stay with the program will earn an award.

Support for Disaster Victims

Japan's earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant damage have resulted in food and water shortages and safety concerns, as well as radiation contamination. From ensuring food safety and access to clean water to providing support to people with injuries or chronic diseases, registered dietitians play an important role in natural disaster relief in many ways, both during an event and afterward.

The deadline is April 1 to apply for ADA Foundation Research Grants. Investing in the dietetics profession by making research resources available for ADA and its members is a priority for the ADA Foundation. A list of available grants and an application information are on ADAF's website or e-mail Beth Labrador.
